Job Description

The Baltimore Sun is seeking a Bureau Chief for western Maryland, Prince George's County, and Montgomery County. The Bureau Chiefs will drive coverage of key county issues, from local government and education to crime, development and business. The Bureau Chief will also be a key figure in developing strategic editorial initiatives and ensuring that The Baltimore Sun newsroom remains connected to the community.

Essential Functions

• Plan, coordinate, write and edit in-depth news coverage of county-wide topics, ensuring stories are timely, comprehensive, accurate, and compelling, .
• Cover a range of issues, including politics, crime, schools, business, health, and cultural events.
• Ensure high editorial standards, including story accuracy, fair representation, and adherence to the newspaper’s editorial voice.
• Collaborate with other departments, including digital and multimedia teams, to create multi-platform content and engage readers across various channels.
• Foster strong relationships with local government officials, law enforcement, community leaders, and other stakeholders to uncover key issues and stories that matter most to County residents.

Education and Experience Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required
• Minimum 5 years of professional reporting and editing experience (news publication and/or daily or weekly journalism experience strongly preferred)
• Comfortable appearing on television and collaborating with local TV news partners to enhance cross-platform coverage.
• Must be able and willing to work irregular hours and holidays as necessary
• Must be familiar with computers and software, including Internet software
• Must be experienced in social media use and platform-specific storytelling
• Excellent command of verbal and written English

Salary Range: $70,000 to $100,000

Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
